Herbert hits the front

Herbert produced a ball-striking masterclass as he fired a flawless 63 at Victoria Golf Club on Thursday to open up a one-shot lead. Starting from the tenth tee, home favourite Herbert turned in 32 courtesy of birdies on the 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th. The 28-year-old made further gains on the first and sixth before finishing with a bang, holing his eagle putt on the last to reach eight under par.

Home hero Lee almost spins it in

The Australian fans know all about Min Woo Lee's talents and they nearly witnessed something very special at Kingston Heath's sixth hole as he went within inches of spinning in his approach shot for an eagle. He instead had to settle for a tap-in birdie.

Amazing amateur

The name of Japanese amateur Rintaro Nakano was flying high on the leaderboard after he shot eight birdies and a solitary bogey on day one. He sat one shot behind leader Herbert in a tie for second.
